Are We Becoming Our Moms?

June 21st, 2007 · 14 Comments

One of our favorite restaurants (that boasts of excellent home-cooking) is decorated with signs all over the walls. On the signs are famous sayings that “Mom” used to say.

The sayings include:

  • “Brush your teeth”
  • “If everyone else jumped over a cliff, would you jump too?”
  • “Go to bed”
  • “Pick up your toys”
  • “Clean your room”
  • “Share”
  • “Say thank-you”
  • “Because I told you so”

I remember these sayings (and many others) from my own childhood and you probably do too. Lately, however, I’ve heard them coming out of my own mouth! That’s why I pose the question, are we becoming are moms?

What about you? What are some of the saying you heard your mom saying when you were a child? Have you started using them?

This looks great! I am becoming more like my Dad everyday.

My mother used to say, “your sins will always find you out”, and she was right. Every time I would do something wrong I would try to cover it up, all the while hearing “your sins will always find you out” echoing in my mind. And, sure enough, she always found out. I stopped trying to cover things up- there was no point!

Hi Char! You’re becoming like your dad? That’s interesting. I guess depends on which parent was more vocal.

Hi Randa! That’s an interesting way that your mother taught you not to cover things up. Do you find yourself using it with your own kids?

The one’s I find myself using most often are:

    “Sorry is as sorry does”

“Wish in one hand, blank in the other and see which one fills up quicker”

“Don’t make me pull this car over”

Mine and my kids favorite is:

    I’ll say… “Behave”
My kids say… “or be beaten”

We love pulling that one out in public. The looks we get are hysterical 🙂

Great post Laura. What fun to walk down memory lane.

I find myself saying, “When you have kids . . .” as in, when you have kids you get to be the boss.

I wish! My mom is wonderful in every way. I’d give the world to become such a lady! She never said: “because I told you so”, she never tried to constrain me in any way. I was as free as a bird. She trusted me and she was always proud of me!

    You’ve been tagged!

Hopefully I am NOT becoming my Mom. She is definitely one-of-a-kind and I hope and pray I am not doing some of the things that she used to do when I was a kid.

One of the things that my Mother used to say to me that I am trying very hard not to say to my girls is, “When you grow up and have your own kids I hope they do to you what you have done to me and more!”

Gayla–The “Don’t make me pull this car over” line. I heard many times. I found myself using it a few times. (I’m hoping that my kids have outgrown it.)

Melissa and Angela–“When you have kids…” That’s a hard one not to say. Especially when your kids think that you don’t get it when you get it only too well.

Mihaela–Your mother sounds wonderful. It sounds like you had a special childhood.

Angela–I’ll thank about how to respond to the meme and get back to you.

    Love it! 🙂 LOL

Yes I am DEFINITELY becoming my mom and since I view her as one of my heroines I think this is a very good thing. 🙂

Let’s see – some of the ones that I can think of right now that my mom says are:

“Mark my words” – she’s usually correct 😉

“I May not always be right but I’m never wrong” LOL 🙂 – she has a great sense of humor

“Think before you speak” – I am very impulsive and really need to do this more 🙂

Take care and thank you for a great post and now I’m going to vote for you.

I would say I am. Just yesterday my daughter asked me in front of my MOM, “What are you making?” We both answered “A MESS!” It is kinda funny. My daughter just looked at me funny. I think we are all doomed to become them. LOL

Hey! Thanks for adding me to the blogroll!
I do say most all of those but trying NOT to be my parents! I just told Shorty the other day, “If Bebe told you to jump off a bridge, Would you?”To which he replied, “Yes. With my swimming trunks and floaties on.”

YIKES! So much for that one!

I have been heard to tell my son to take his coat off indoors or he “won’t feel the benefit of it” like my Mum used to say to me. 🙂

  • 13 Lucy // Jun 27, 2007 at 4:03 am

Oh yes! “Take your coat off, or you won’t feel the benefit” is one I’ve inherited too, as is “I want never gets” – both from my Granny. I was so surprised at myself when I came out with that in the supermarket, and so were the other people around me. At least I made them laugh (its a very old lady type comment).

My Granny also used to say (when she didn’t want to fetch/do something) “[I can’t do X because] … I’ve got a bone in my leg”. It worked on me when I was little, and I’d do whatever it was – why doesn’t it work for me when I say it? My children just say “Of course you have, Mummy”.

Hi badthing! I think it’s great that you want to become your mom. Actually, I think all moms should seek to inspire their kids like that.

Hi Skittles! It sounds like not only are you becoming your mom, it sounds like your daughter is becoming you!

Hi Nikki! I was glad to add you to the blogroll. You have a very helpful site.

Hi Surbuban Mum and Lucy! Your moms both told you something mine didn’t. I feel left out. .
