Is Shopping A Girl Thing?

November 29th, 2007 · 6 Comments

Yesterday I ran a post on my other blog asking if everyone had their Christmas shopping done yet.

Since I know a lot of people in my face-to-face world who went out on Black Friday, bought everyone’s gifts, and wrapped them – I kind of thought that I would get a lot of people saying things like, “yes, we’re done” or “we just have one more gift to buy.”

I didn’t mention gender at all, and I thought it was a pretty simple question.

Imagine my surprise when I found that a fellow writer (and friend) had linked to my post with another post titled, It Must Be A Girl Thing. His post went on to describe how his wife had taken care of all the Christmas shopping at their house.

What’s your take on it? Is shopping a “girl thing?”

While I don’t think shopping is a “girl” thing, per se, I believe it’s the degree to which you want it done properly that motivates women to complete the chore. If I left Christmas up to my husband, he would either go WAY overboard on wacky purchases or totally forget until the 24th! It’s much easier just to do it myself. 🙂

Well, my husband’s favorite stores are Radio Shack and the Sharper Image. He would spend hours there if I let him. He’s not too interested in anyplace else though.

    Thanks for the mention, Laura!

To clarify — shopping itself isn’t a “girl thing” just the way we shop shows some important gender differences. My wife enjoys visiting a store and spending time examining items, comparing prices, and taking her time. I go shopping for a specific item and when I find it I make my purchase and leave.

Thankfully, the internet has made it possible for so much shopping to be done online. I really hate malls!

I agree with your first respondents answer — we tend to go crazy over things that we like (big purchase items) and we can wait until it is almost too late.

There are exceptions to these generalities as I am sure someone will gladly point out.

Thanks for coming by and clearing that up!

I do think that there are a lot of women shopping on the Internet too, though.

It will be interesting to see the responses. This blog has a different readership, so I thought that I’d throw it out for discussion here.

Oh my. My husband can take hours going from store to store, comparing prices and deciding if this is really “just right.” I know what I want, get it and leave.

It drives me nuts to make joint purchases because it means an hour of second-guessing and seeing if another store has it cheaper. At the end of it, we end up back at the first store with a great deal less gas!

Well, my husband can take a long time in certain stores. Radio shack is one of them.
